Our beginnings

Pacific Reef Fisheries commenced operations in 1998. Over the years a successful prawn and cobia farming operation was established, producing over 1000 tonnes of premium seafood each year.

In 2017 Pacific Biotechnologies (Australia) Pty Ltd (Pacific Bio) purchased Pacific Reef Fisheries enabling growth via new investment. Pacific Bio immediately set about streamlining operations to focus on single species and enhancing sustainability credentials to further reduce environmental impact and ensure responsible farming practices.

Hatchery

Pacific Reef Fisheries operate a state-of-the-art hatchery at Guthalungra in North Queensland. This is where domestication and breeding programs operate, ensuring premium husbandry and fulfilment of seed stock requirements for annual production. This facility is critical to operations as it enables constant improvement of product and systems. The site is remotely located to ensure full biosecurity for animals and to mitigate against disease.

Our story tomorrow

The Guthalungra Aquaculture Precinct is 70km South of Ayr (1 hour drive) and 50km North of Bowen (30 minute drive).

When complete, the new facility will house state-of-the-art SMART farming techniques including;

  • A domestication sanctuary ensuring biosecurity to mitigate against disease;
  • Automation to reduce energy consumption and increase safety;
  • RegenAqua bioremediation technology that restores and recycles water and reduces oceanic requirements compared to other aquaculture facilities, ensuring no net decline in discharge water quality to protect the health of surrounding waterways and oceans. 

All SMART farming techniques will align with Pacific Reef Fisheries primary goal to be a sustainable and responsible aquaculture operation that ensures minimal environmental impact.
